Hyderabad Jan. 24 Nicholas Piramal India Ltd (NPIL) has set up the first inhalation anaesthetics plant in Asia at Hyderabad.

It would produce Halothane and Isoflurance, which would ensure availability of these products in the country at a cheaper price.

The complex multi-step plant has heralded India's entry into the exclusive club of nations manufacturing inhalation anesthetics in the regulatory markets, said Mr Jayesh Shroff, Managing Director of Shroff & Associates (Engineers), Mumbai.

The plant is the starting point for NPIL into other high value anesthetics. It employs about 50 directly and another 100 indirectly. Plans are currently on for entering into current generation anesthetics, according to a press release from Shroff & Associates.

From providing concept to commissioning services for chemical and pharmaceutical plants, Shroff has been selected for a national award in consultancy services by the Consultancy Development Centre (CDC), under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, for the implementation of the NPIL project here.

Mr I.P. Vora, President (Projects), NPIL, said "Shroff along with the company team completed the plant from concept to commissioning in eight-and-half months, in about half the time competing consultants could have done. This has meant savings both in time and costs."

The advent of domestic manufacture of inhalation anaesthetics would lower the cost price Indian patients have to pay for the otherwise imported and expensive drugs. In addition, this plant provides the long-term continuity of Halothane in India and other poor nations, the release said.

The market share of NPIL stands at a 70 per cent for Halothane and 15 per cent for Isoflurance. Costs of these products would also come down by 15 to 20 per cent compared to the US/EU markets, the release added.
