Mumbai, Jan. 25 Pepper and mentha oil futures hogged the limelight in commodity trading on Thursday. Pepper futures on NCDEX hit the upper circuit of 4 per cent at Rs 12,140 per quintal on fresh inquiries from the European Union and the Gulf region. The dwindling stocks in Vietnam and Indonesia also pushed up pepper prices in India.

Mentha oil gains

Mentha oil futures on MCX gained 1.94 per cent at Rs 568 per 50 kg, while kapaskali and kapas futures rose 2.05 per cent and 1 per cent to Rs 318 per 50 kg and Rs 390 per 20 kg, respectively. Taking a cue from strong international markets, rubber futures on MCX gained Rs 95 per quintal at Rs 10,206.

Chana futures on NCDEX were up 1.16 per cent to Rs 2,351 per quintal on good buying. Opening on a bearish note after the import duty cut, soya oil futures on NCDEX gained in the late session to close at Rs 456 per quintal, marginally lower than previous closing of Rs 457. Profit booking in potato futures dragged prices on MCX down 2.17 per cent to Rs 506 per quintal.

NCDEX registered a turnover of Rs 2,220 crore (Rs 2,782 crore, up to 11 p.m.) up to 5 pm on 78,330 (87,870) trades, while on MCX it was Rs 3,276 crore (Rs 9,241 crore, up to 11 p.m.) on 66,262 (1,70,228) trades.
