Thanjavur Jan. 25 The best way to manage conflict is to handle it, Mr N. Swaminathan, Chief Consultant, Gateway Human Resources, has said.

He was speaking about conflict management at a meeting organised by Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) and Business Line club of SASTRA here recently.

Mr Swaminathan said that conflict starts at home while choosing subjects for studying. "While parents may want their wards to choose a particular subject, children may want to pick up something else."

Conflict again comes while choosing courses for higher education and then, choosing a career. "Once into a career, a person may have to face bigger conflicts, social conflicts and conflicts within himself. Every one wants to please people and when they try to pretend, there is simmering boil in their heart," he said.

"We have to handle conflicts by asserting ourselves. Putting forth our views honestly and sincerely without upsetting the applecart," Mr Swaminathan said.

People differ on sensitivity issues. Some are very sensitive and some are not. Stress management is another way of resolving conflicts.

"There are lot of ways to handle stress. They include listening to music, good sleep, rendering service to others, reading and doing little introspection," he said.

Mr Sri Kanthan, Regional Manager of The Hindu; Mr Chandrasekaran, Assistant Regional Manager; Mr Ramaswamy, Dean, Planning and Placement; and Ms Vaijayanthi, Head of the Department of Management, SASTRA, participated in the programme.
