Chennai, Jan. 25 English training academy Veta aims to set up branches in other countries in the sub-continent and in Singapore and Malaysia in the next two years.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr Sreenadha B. Reddy, National Brand Manager, Veta, said the company had registered its trademark in Singapore and Nepal. The process is pending clearance in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Veta has initiated the application process in China too.

For the immediate future, Veta's focus is expanding its reach beyond the South, said Mr V. Gopalakrishnan, General Manager (Franchise), Veta. It has already set up 30 centres in various cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Patna and Srinagar, and is eyeing Ahmedabad and Mumbai. It aims to have 200 centres operating by the end of 2007 and hopes to scale up to 500 by 2010.

The expansion plans have resulted in the institute hiking its ad spend. A little-known fact is that the Veta TV commercial — featuring the domestic help singing in English much to the astonishment of her employer — was made by renowned film director Nagesh Kukunoor, Mr Reddy said.

Veta operates both through company-owned centres and franchises.

Sixty-five per cent of the students are from technical education sectors, and want to learn English to improve their career prospects, Mr Reddy said. Parents who aim for better participation in PTA meetings in their children's school, grandparents, who want to keep in touch with their grandchildren, and shopkeepers, who want to communicate better with customers who don't know the local language, also account for a big chunk of Veta's students.
