Coonoor Jan 25 The impact of frost is telling upon the arrival of tea for the auctions at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) with the volume catalogued for the fourth auctions of 2007 this week dipping to 8.34 lakh kg.

This is some 2 lakh kg lower than the last week's offer.

But, last week itself, the volume was lower by 1.1 lakh kg over the previous week.

This week's offer is the lowest so far for the year.

Still, last week, the volume was more than the corresponding sale of 2006 by 2 lakh kg.

Now, the volume has fallen to close to the level of the corresponding sale of 2006.

Of the 8.34 lakh kg on offer now, 6.26 lakh kg belonged to leaf grades, while 2.08 lakh kg, dust grades.

CTC grade

Again, as much as 7.61 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and only 0.73 lakh kg, orthodox variety.

The proportion of orthodox is low in respect of both the leaf and dust categories.

In the leaf grade, orthodox variety accounted for only 0.41 lakh kg, while the CTC 5.83 lakh kg. In the dust grade, orthodox variety accounted for 0.3 lakh kg, while the CTC 1.78 lakh kg.

Prices to firm up

Auctioneers said the low volume could help the prices to firm up as in the last three sales if the demand from upcountry buyers continued.

With the teas from North Indian plantations yet to impact the market because of winter tapering, the demand for the teas at Coonoor auctions is expected to be firm as in the previous weeks.

Producers said frost had hit some 1,000 hectares and, hence, the volume was likely to be low for the next few weeks.

But, the quality of the high grown winter Nilgiri crop had improved, thereby, creating a premium demand.
