Record passenger traffic at Chhatrapati Shivaji airport

Mumbai Jan. 25 The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) saw 21.5 lakh passengers walk through its doors in December 2006, setting a new record for passenger traffic in the country's airports.

According to a statement by Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), domestic passengers accounted for 14.3 lakh passengers while international passengers numbered 7.2 lakh.

The airport handled 18 lakh passengers in December 2005, while its previous high was 19.3 lakh passengers in May 2006.

For the nine-month period ending December 31, 2006, the total passenger traffic handled was 1.62 crore (1.08 crore domestic and 54 lakh international), an increase of 22.36 per cent over 2005. MIAL estimates that the airport can handle up to four crore passengers a year.
