Bangalore Traders' bodies to suspend strike

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Jan. 26

The various traders' associations in the city decided on Friday to suspend their indefinite strike opposing the proposed amendments to the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committees (APMC) Act after the State Government invited them for a meeting on February 1 to resolve the issue. A representative of the association said the State Agricultural Marketing Minister, Mr Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, had called for a meeting on February 1.

"We are meeting the Minister on February 1. If the talks fail, we will continue our strike from that day itself," the representative said at a press conference. He said that the proposed amendments would only help the interests of large MNCs; they would lead to a food crisis and also cause employment problems for thousands of people.
