Hyderabad Jan. 26 A senior scientist from the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, Dr Ahmed Kamal, has been selected for the UK India Education and Research Initiative's (UKIERI) Standard award to undertake research in the areas of drug discovery.

Dr Kamal will work with Prof. Andrew David Miller of the Imperial College Genetic Therapies Centre, London - who is the co-awardee from the UK - on biomedical solutions for India and the UK to discover next-generation anti-infective drugs.

According to a pres release from the IICT, the research grant is £150,000. Dr Kamal and Prof. Miller will combine their expertise to discover novel molecules targeting tuberculosis, malaria and other anti-virals.

Student platform

The UK-India collaboration is a part of an overall project also involving Germany, under which students from India get an opportunity to work and get trained in a European research environment. Joint patents emanating from the work before commercialisation will be protected as novel inventions.

Under UKIERI, about 23 research proposals from 261 applicants were selected and peer-reviewed. The British MP and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Gordon Brown, was present at a function in New Delhi recently, where the award winners were announced.
