Hyderabad Jan. 26 Standard Chartered Bank has announced a grant of Rs 2.27 crore to Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital for the construction of a hospital at Vepagunta in Visakhapatnam district.

The contribution under the bank's `Seeing is Believing' programme aims to help restore sight to people suffering from avoidable blindness. It is expected to reach out to the people in neighbouring Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts too.

Mr Robert Green, Regional Credit Officer (India and South Asia), told newspersons that the bank was part-funding the hospital being built by the foundation. The Rs 15-crore hospital could also serve the people in Chhattisgarh and Orissa.

The bank's programme in its current phase spanning 2004-06 has completed around 79,000 surgeries through various implementation partners, Mr Green said.

The hospital is being built on land given by the Andhra Pradesh Government to the foundation.

Former British Prime Minister, Mr John Major, and Mr Mervyn Davies, Chairman of Standard Chartered London, took part in the ground-breaking ceremony in March 2005.

The new hospital will have an area of 98,000 sq ft with five floors, 150 beds and eight operation theatres with specialised facilities.
