Thiruvananthapuram Jan. 26 Kerala has launched a branding campaign for the State's coir. From now on, Kerala will market its coir and coir products under the brand `Kerala Coir - Golden Yarn of God's Own Country.'

This is part of an effort to create a distinct identity for coir from Kerala and thus help the State's ailing coir sector. The branding initiative will also include a quality control system.

LOGO RELEASED

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, released the Kerala Coir brand's logo at a specially organised event in the city on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, he said that a brand would help differentiate Kerala's coir from similar products made in other regions. The Kerala Coir brand will help the State's coir industry compete in the international and national markets. The brand campaign is part of a series of measures by the State Government to support the coir sector, which sustains over four lakh workers, he added.

COIR EXPORTS

Coir exports are expected to touch Rs 600 crore during this financial year, said Mr G. Sudhakaran, Minister for Coir Industry, Government of Kerala. In five years, the Government expects the State's coir exports to touch Rs 1,500 crore a year, while sales within the country are expected to touch approximately Rs 2,000 crore a year, he added.

The Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr C. Divakaran, inaugurated Coir Mart, an exhibition of coir products and coir technology organised as part of the coir promotion initiative. The exhibition, in the city's VJT Hall, will end on January 31.
