Awards & Honours Biz leaders shine in Padma awards list Our Bureau
The list reads like a Who's Who of the business world with Bharti Telecom Chief Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal, former Tata Steel Managing Director Mr J.J. Irani, HSBC India CEO Ms Naina Lal Kidwai rubbing shoulders with the Chief of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Mr O. Suzuki, and the India born CEO of Pepsi, Ms Indra Nooyi. For Ms Nooyi, who was recognised for her contribution in the field of trade and industry, the award represents the most significant of honours ever since she took over the reins at Pepsi. American economist Mr Jeffery D Sachs, who has been named among the 100 most influential leaders by Time magazine, was also chosen for the Padma Bhushan, in recognition of his contribution to business and economy. Also awarded was the Director of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, Mr Bakul Dholakia, and NASSCOM Chief Mr Kiran Karnik. Speaking on the award, Mr Karnik said, "I am delighted, elated and feel this honour is a recognition of the success of the Indian IT industry". Renowned economist Mr Raja J. Chelliah, known for his stellar role in India's tax reforms, was awarded Padma Vibhushan. Sharing the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian awards, with him were former bureaucrat/technocrat Mr V. Krishnamurthy, jurist Mr Fali S. Nariman, writer Mr Khushwant Singh, and former cabinet secretary Mr Naresh Chandra. In all, 121 Padma awards were announced by the President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. These included 10 Padma Vibhushans, 32 Padma Bhushans and 79 Padma Shri awards.
