Chennai Jan. 28 The Federation of Indian Export Organisations has welcomed the Tamil Nadu Government's announcement of a Rs 700-crore marine discharge facility to tackle pollution from the dyeing units.

According to a press release from the FIEO, the announcement by the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, in the Assembly, that a marine discharge project would be implemented to tackle the effluent pollution from dyeing units paves way for a permanent solution to the problem.

It may be recalled that earlier this month over 730 dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur and surrounding areas stopped production from January 1 following an order of the Madras High Court imposing a fine on them for effluents discharged into Noyyal River. They restarted operations after the State Government had assured them of support for a long-term solution to tackle the pollution.

Tamil Nadu would float a special purpose vehicle to set up the effluent treatment facilities. The industry believes this would be a long-term solution to the pollution problem posed by dyeing units in Tirupur, Perundurai, Erode, Namakkal and Karur, they said.
