Cultivation States - Kerala Poabs estate - pioneering organic cultivation Aravindan
Poabs organic estate exports several of its products. It took 16 years of rigorous efforts to bring it to the level of unique global standards, claimed Mr P.A. Jacob, Chairman, Poabs Group. As part of the activities for making the farm truly organic, Poabs introduced the most of modern soil and water conservation methods. Now, the estate has 52 check dams to ensure irrigation and water conservation around the year. Soil conservation bunds, water conversation, soil erosion check models created within the farm could be replicated in the entire Western Ghat area. All these activities, including tree growing, plant population control measures and so on are undertaken in such a way that the ecology of the tract is maintained undisturbed. Poabs estate has to its credit the bio-dynamically grown coffee, which is rare and could be termed as exotic. Poabs tea is hailed as "single strain purity" since it is prepared from a single strain and from a single estate. The organic tea, pepper, cardamom and coffee are exported from the farm to various trade organisations in Germany, France, the UK, the US, Japan and Australia. Mr Jacob said that the organic red rice produced in Kerala's Kuttanadu has stood the test of the grain markets in Germany and possibilities are bright to create a new avenue for Kuttanadu red rice in Europe. The farm enjoys organic certifications from several international agencies, including Demeter International of Germany and Skal International of the Netherlands.
