Hyderabad Jan. 28 The Indian Society of Oilseeds Research is organising a three-day national seminar on `Changing global vegetable oils scenario: Issues and challenges before India' here.

The seminar, which will begin on January 29, will discuss the vegetable scenario in totality to chalk out a roadmap to address the issues concerning the oilseed sector in the country, according to Dr M.V. Rao, Chairman of the organising committee of the seminar.

IMPORTS

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Dr Rao, who is also the Chairman of AP Netherlands Biotechnology Project, said though India was major producer of oilseeds and oils, the ever-increasing demand for oils was forcing the country to go for imports.

"The import bill on vegetable oils is Rs 12,000 crore for 2005-06 next only to fossil fuel imports," he said.

"The demand for vegetable oils was pegged at 75 million tonnes by 2020. This calls for close scrutiny of the situation and finding a solution," Dr Rao said.

The meet would discuss issues like genetic diversity and gene mining, current trends in pest management and non-conventional vegetable oils.
