Visakhapatnam Jan. 28 The Visakhapatnam port has handled 45 million tonnes of cargo till date, which is marginally ahead of the cargo handled during the same period last year, according to Mr K. Ratna Kishore, the Chairman.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion of the Republic Day, Mr Kishore said that for the seventh year in succession the port was enjoying the premier status among the major ports in the country, with the dedicated efforts of workers, the trade and all others concerned.

SMOOTH SAILING

He said the port was functioning well on all efficiency parameters and the infrastructure at the port was being strengthened. The widening of the inner harbour channel and turning circle, to facilitate the movement of panamax vessels, was expected to be completed by March.

Further, the four berths in the inner harbour were being strengthened and deepened to reduce the congestion being experienced at the general cargo berth in the outer harbour.

The consultant appointed by the Indian Ports Association had submitted the techno-economic feasibility report for installation of mechanised facility at the general cargo berth in the outer harbour for unloading coking coal. The road connectivity project, linking the port with the NH-5, had been completed by Dec. 2006.

He said the port trust had formulated various schemes at a cost of Rs 3,035 crore to enhance the capacity in view of the future challenges and to give the best service to port users.

He said the security at the port had been strengthened in recent times.
