City plans Vizhinjam project vital to development of Thiruvananthapuram. Plans to increase frequency of Air India Express flights on the Thiruvananthapuram-Abu Dhabi and Thiruvananthapuram-Muscat sectors. Emphasis on proper land-use policies.
Thiruvananthapuram is home to a number of world-class institutions. The State Government will do all it can to support efforts to turn it into a city with world-class facilities, he said. In his special address, Mr V. Thulasidas, Chairman and Managing Director, Air India, said the proposed Vizhinjam port would "bring about a sea change" for Thiruvananthapuram. All stakeholders must work together to see that the project took off, he said. The city has the potential to emerge as a major centre of the knowledge industry, he added.
To finalise consultant
Commenting on Air India's proposed aircraft maintenance base in the city, Mr Thulasidas said the airline was in the process of finalising the project management consultant for the venture. The consultant for the maintenance base should start work by February-end. The airline also planned to increase the frequency of Air India Express flights on the Thiruvananthapuram-Abu Dhabi and Thiruvananthapuram-Muscat sectors, he added. While discussing Thiruvananthapuram's future course of development, a consensus must be arrived at on a vision for the city, said Dr Samuel Paul, former Director, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
The theme of the convention is `Trivandrum Capital Region Development - A New Vision'. The inaugural session was followed by three technical sessions: `Thiruvananthapuram as a Knowledge Hub', `Booming Leisure' and `Connectivity'.
