Opinion - Letters
`Kindly Adjust'

The article "Kindly Adjust" (Business Line, January 25) was most interesting and made some very pertinent observations.

But one area in which we should integrate with the rest of the world, especially after 1992, is in the way we deal with big numbers — `lakhs' and `crores'.

I don't buy the argument that switching to the international nomenclature of millions and billions will lead to confusion in the Indian business context. Way back in 1956, when we switched from the annas and pies/pice regime (and also from ounces and pounds, miles and furlongs, etc.) to the decimal system, the whole country put in a `swalpa adjust madi' effort, and got used to it in course of time.
