Mumbai Jan. 30 Intelligent Business Systems (IBS), the India division of the UK-based artificial intelligence solutions firm, will spend about Rs 50 crore to establish five `key' research and development (R&D) centres in India, Dr Kaustubh Chokshi, CEO, IBS, said.IBS provides artificial intelligence enterprise solutions and analytic applications for businesses. Artificial intelligence is a science that studies how to endow computers with capabilities of human intelligence

The company's R&D currently happens from its headquarters in the UK. The primary research and development centre would be set up in the 20-acre area the company has earmarked for establishing a research institute in Pune. "The Pune R&D centre, to be set up at a consideration of Rs 10 crore will operational by the first quarter of 2007," said Dr Chokshi. The company expects to shift about 40 per cent of its global R&D to the Pune centre by fiscal 2009.

In the second phase of its India programme, the company will utilise Rs 40 crore to set up satellite research and development centres in cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhiby the first quarter of fiscal 2009.

The company will invite upcoming scientists to these centres. "We will give the scientists the necessary infrastructure and complete freedom in the space of artificial intelligence to develop their new ideas into technologies," Dr Chokshi said adding that it would enable the company to develop new technologies.

Dr Chokshi also said that the company intended to go public within three years.
