Railways States - Other States Mumbai suburban rail capacity may be enhanced Mamuni Das
The Planning Commission is keen on including the Phase-III, which is valued at Rs 2,550 crore.
These plans are for the suburban rail transport and are over and above the mass rapid transit systems, being implemented by the State Government and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.
PHASE II PLANS
The Phase II plans are aimed at completely segregating the suburban train operations from the main line passenger and freight services in Mumbai. Moreover, with the Phase-II implementation, the overcrowding in Mumbai suburban trains during peak hour is expected to come down to 3000 passengers per nine-coach rake against the present level of 5000. For the Phase-II operations, valued at Rs 4,509 crore including construction of 88 km of new rail tracks and acquisition of 96 new rakes, the Government of Maharashtra and Indian Railways recently made a presentation in Planning Commission. Each rake consists of nine EMUs. "We presented the study on Phase-II operations of MUTP to the Planning Commission," Dr P.C. Sehgal, Managing Director, Mumbai Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, said. MRVC is a joint venture between Indian Railways (51 per cent equity) and Maharashtra Government (49 per cent), formed to implement the rail component of MUTP.
PHASE III DETAILS
The Planning Commission is keen on including the Phase-III, which is valued at Rs 2,550 crore and includes Rs 1,200 crore of signalling and telecom works apart from acquisition of 47 rakes, in the 2007-2012 Plan period as well. "We would like to take up MUTP Phase-II and Phase-III in the XI Plan period," Dr B.N. Puri, Planning Commission told Business Line recently on the sidelines of a conference. However, given the coach manufacturing capacity within the country, addressing the demand for coaches for Phase III within the XI Plan period may be difficult.
