Chennai, Jan. 31 "From a student, when you mature into an adult, you become a responsible member of the society. As a student, even if you fail, it mostly affects only you. Whereas when you work, whatever you do will affect others. The perception of society about you as a student is different from that of you as an employee," Mr N. Sundararajan, Executive Director and Company Secretary, Ashok Leyland, told the students of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College in a lecture organised by the Business Line Club.

Real life is not like a textbook. In a textbook, the mathematical problem remains the same. In real life, everything is uncertain. Nothing is written in black and white. There will be frustration, hidden animosity and negative thoughts. If one gets a promotion, others cannot come to that post. Whereas, in a class of 40, every one can score centum, he said. "You are not writing the exams for just passing. Exams are for the society to understand that you have acquired certain skills/knowledge. Self-development calls one to internalise the learning. You may be a genius, but if you are not acceptable to society, or not presenting yourself properly and have a negative attitude and poor time management, your genius will be of no use," Mr Sundararajan said.

Accept defeats, rejections and failures. It does not mean one is not good. Most failures come from within oneself. It comes from within and not from outside. "We always think that I am right and only the other fellow is at fault. Ambition is different from realism. One needs to be ambitious in life, but have your foot on the ground and be realistic," he advised the students.
