Coimbatore Jan 31 The Tamilnadu Dairies Association (TDA), Dindigul, has announced increase in milk price ranging from Re 1 to Rs 2 per litre with effect from February 1. The last price hike was implemented six years ago.

In the case of toned milk, the increase would be Re 1 per litre, standardised milk would cost Rs 1.50 more per litre, and cream milk price would increase by Rs 2 per litre. In a press release, Mr Samiappan, President, and Mr Rajasekar, Secretary, respectively of the association, said in the case of toned milk the price will increase from Rs 4 to Rs 4.50 for 250 ml, Rs 7.50 to Rs 8 for 500 ml and from Rs 15 to Rs 16 for one litre. Toned milk contains 3 per cent fat and 8.5 per cent solid non-fats.

They said depending on the quality of milk, TDA members purchased milk from producers at Rs 8.50 to Rs 9 per litre and the processing cost was about Rs 4 per litre. From February 1, the purchase price will increase to Rs 9.50 or Rs 10 per litre. The processing cost has also been rising. Standardised milk containing 4.5 per cent fat and 8.5 per cent solid non-fats will cost Rs 4 for 200 ml (from Rs 3.50 at present), 500 ml will cost Rs 9 (Rs 8) and one litre will cost Rs 17.50 (Rs 16). Cream milk containing 6 per cent fat and 9 per cent solid non-fats will cost Rs 20 per litre (Rs 18).

Explaining the reasons for the price increase, they said that in the past four years, fodder cost and medical expenses have increased substantially. Due to shortage of manpower, workers' wages have also increased. In Tamil Nadu, daily milk production is around 65 lakh litres. Of this, about 42 lakh litres is sold as branded product, 13 lakh litres not processed and sold directly, and the remaining 10 lakh litres is consumed by dairy farmers.

Normally, milk production increased by 4 per cent every year and the increase in purchase price would motivateproducers to step up milk production by 7-8 per cent, they said.
