Trade & Labour Unions States - Andhra Pradesh Ship stranded at Vizag port over wage dispute Our Bureau
The ship, m.v. Lady Bellinda, carrying the flag of North Korea, was berthed in West Quay 7 in the inner harbour for discharging urea to Coromandel Fertilisers Ltd earlier this month. After unloading the cargo, the vessel was shifted to another berth.
Wage arrears
Among the 25-member crew, 14 are from Myanmar, five from Egypt and six from Syria. Nineteen members of the crew, from Myanmar and Egypt, went on strike from January 18, demanding wage arrears from October last year. The chief engineer, captain and other senior officers have not gone strike, as they have to maintain the engine. The senior members of the crew are from Syria. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) intervened and the owner of the merchant vessel arrived here this week. However, no headway could be made in the talks with the owner. The ITF representatives insisted on payment of wage arrears in accordance with the recommendations of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The owner did not agree to it. The members of the crew are paid minimum wages of $350 a month as against the $905 recommended by the ILO.
