`Make manufacturing jobs attractive'

Our Bureau

Pune, Feb. 1

Mr B. Muthuraman, Managing Director, Tata Steel, and architect of the newly inked Tata-Corus deal has sounded a wake-up call to the Indian manufacturing industry asking it to rise "above the noise" and market itself to youngsters. Addressing students of the College of Engineering, Pune, Mr Muthuraman rued that though manufacturing held the highest position in the hierarchy of creation of wealth, it was the IT and telecom sectors that attracted the best talent.

"I feel worried. Manufacturing industry has not been able to impact young minds," he said, pointing out that no country in the world had become wealthy without passing through a "solid manufacturing phase."
