Pune Feb. 2 Tata AutoComp GY Batteries Pvt Ltd, the 50:50 joint venture between Tata AutoComp Systems Ltd and GS Yuasa International, Japan, has launched Tata Green, a new range of car batteries.

The Chief Executive Officer, Mr Yogesh Dhawan, told Business Line that the batteries would be manufactured at its Ranjangaon facility in Pune. The unit will produce about half-a-million at the initial stages. Its total capacity is two million per annum.

He said Rs 100 crore is being invested in the facility, spread over 15 acres. Initially the plant would cater to the passenger cars and the utility vehicles segment. It would later on manufacture batteries for the commercial vehicles, farm vehicles and two-wheelers before the year-end. Mr Yogesh said Tata Green will have features such as longer battery life and shelf life, higher levels of vibration resistance on all types of Indian terrain, and would deliver high cranking power for instant starts. The batteries would be made available through Tata AutoComp's exclusive outlets, which would number about ten in the A and B cities as also through its dealer network.

The CEO said the company is estimating a turnover of Rs 150 crore in the first year. Looking at the battery segment, Mr Yogesh said the four-wheeler industry requires about nine million and the two-wheeler sector needs about 13 million. Of the nine million, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) account for about two million and the after market accounts for the rest. Of this seven million, the unorganised segment contributes to about 60 per cent.

Similarly in the two-wheeler segment, he noted that about demand for 6.5 million batteries comes in from the OEMs and the rest from the after market.

Of the after market contribution, 60 per cent is from the unorganised sector.
