Tea Prices up at Coonoor tea sales P.S. Sundar
Coonoor, Feb. 2 Prices improved for quality teas while they declined for medium and plainer sorts at last week's auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association. Although the volume of 8.33 lakh kg offered was the lowest so far for the year 2007, the demand was not widespread to absorb all sorts of teas. So, some teas had to be withdrawn. Plainer leaf grades and browner dusts suffered withdrawals. Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Lever Ltd bought better medium grades. JV Gokal and JFK were active on orthodox leaf. Western Indian dealers bought orthodox dust grades. Upcountry buyers showed interest on some select whole leaf grades. Karnataka buyers were active for CTC dusts. The export demand was less pronounced. Pakistani buyers limited their purchases to clean black fannings and paid Rs 46 to 48 a kg. "Pakistan continues to import fanning grades from Kenya. So, there is sufficient stock. We don't have much orders on hand," an exporter to Pakistan said.Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 96 a kg.
