The centre, the first such across the globe for ABB, is expected to streamline and make more efficient all its transactional processes in HR and finance. "This is not a systems change, nor a cost reduction campaign, but a hi-tech approach to HR and finance accounting," Mr Gary Steel, Global Head of HR, ABB Group, told Business Line. The centre employing close to 200 people will handle recruitment process such as online testing, teleconferencing, on-boarding and payrolling.
First centre
Mr Steel said that this is a country-by-country project and India has been chosen to kick off the first service centre due to its excellent track record of delivering quality in these areas. As other countries start setting up such centres, India would be expected to share its learnings. He also did not rule out the possibility of the India centre processing HR work of other ABB countries. "It makes eminent sense to do that. But we want to walk before we run," he said. ABB India currently has 5,700 employees after recruiting about 1,300 people last year. Following the launch of the India centre, it will set up similar centres in Sweden, the US and China. Mr Gary Steel, who's also a member of the Group Executive Committee, said that globally ABB does not have "enough" Indians and "we would like some more."
Networking
To enable seamless movement of people across countries, the company is working on a pilot project (ABB Life) where young graduates, nearly 1,000 of them every year, will go through a high-impact, high-energy networking programme.
