New Delhi, Feb. 3

Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd has received the US Food and Drug Administration approval to sell amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium for oral suspension in three strengths. In an official statement, the company said that the Ranbaxy formulation had been judged as bio-equivalent of GlaxoSmithKline's registered anti-infection drug Augmentin, which has a total sales of $216 million. Augmentin's sales for 600 mg, 42.9 mg (base) and 5 ml, the three versions that Ranbaxy now has marketing approval for, are believed to account for $136.9 million in sales. The oral suspension of the drugs will be available in April 2007, said Mr Jim Meehan, Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc, the Florida-based subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd.
