Mumbai Feb. 4 The Retailers Association of India (RAI) is working with the Maharashtra Government on a plan to train the educated unemployed youth in the State from the SC, DTNT (Denotified and Nomadic Tribes in Rajasthan) and OBC categories and those registered with the employment exchanges.

Beginning February, the association will train 500 candidates listed with the employment exchanges who then could be absorbed by the retail companies.

The course modules will be developed and delivered by the association. Students will be trained in soft skills, retail selling skills and customer service concepts. The training programme also plans to have discussions, assignments, interactive sessions, workshops etc. The Maharashtra Government will bear the cost of the six-week training, estimated at around Rs 5,000 per head. The association guarantees suitable placements for candidates on completion of the course.

The Retailers Association of India is an independent body of retailers formed on September 28, 2004. They have around 25 training partners spread throughout the country and have trained candidates in front-end retail.

According to Mr Gibson G. Vedamani, CEO, RAI, "We are proud to facilitate such talent transformation among the unemployed youth of Maharashtra to empower them to take up jobs in organised retailing in India. Our relationship with the Maharashtra Government will go a long way to generate employment in the retail sector in the State."

"This is our first project with the State Government. Talks are on with the Karnataka Government and we also have plans to undertake similar projects in other States," said Mr Gibson.
