Hyderabad, Feb. 5 Efkon, the Austrian-based Intelligent Transportation Systems provider, is planning to set up a software development centre for its global solution development requirements in Mumbai or Pune.

"The development centre might come up at a SEZ (special economic zone) or STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) areas with 75-100 people," Mr Pushkar Kulkarni, Chief Executive Officer of Efkon India, told Business Line.

The company was planning to set up a Centre of Excellence for HTMS (Highway Traffic Management Systems) for Efkon worldwide in Pune. The company offered solutions like road pricing and tolling, vehicle communication systems, traffic telematics systems and smart card-based multi application transportation payment systems.

Efkon India, which contributed 15 per cent of Rs 350 crore turnover of Efkon global, was in the process of indigenising the solutions to optimum extent possible.

Also, it had plans to develop specific solutions for the Indian market.

"For one, we built a new platform to attend to the needs of small toll plazas. Also, we have a solution for automatic vehicle classification for specific needs of India," he said.

Stating that the solutions offered in the market for vehicle tracking were basic, he said Efkon's solution was aimed at linking up tracking and fleet management with payment solutions.

The company was in the process of developing UTMS (Urban Traffic Management System) on the lines of HTMS for key metros in India, beginning with Mumbai.

The UTMS is integrated with many critical third-party systems for managing emergencies. It automated all the activities at the control centre and supported activities of emergency handling that included medical assistance to patients in critical condition and ambulance management.

The company was in talks with Mumbai civic authorities in this regard.

It also planned to introduce multi-application pre-paid smart cards that could be used by highway users for multiple purposes like toll, fuel, food, shopping and ticketing.
