Coonoor Feb. 5 Prices for quality teas continued to rise at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) auction here on Saturday because of consumer preference. The low volume on offer helped the prices for other teas to be steady. Prices declined only for those whose quality failed to draw bids.

The volume of 7.77 lakh kg offered was the lowest so far for the year. For the third consecutive week, auctions were conducted under the old manual outcry system as the e-auctions failed.

"Brighter liquoring teas saw prices rise Re 1 to Rs 2 a kg. Whole leaf orthodox teas maintained last levels, but fibrous flaky teas could be sold only when the prices were reduced by Rs 2-3. Better medium CTC dust grades fetched around Rs 2 more," an auctioneer told Business Line.

CIS shippers selective

On the export front, CIS shippers were selective on medium and plainer grades. They paid up to Rs 44 a kg. Pakistan slowed down its intake as the exporters said that the country had returned to Kenya. The exporters paid Rs 47-49 a kg for the teas they bought for Pakistan. Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 38-41 per kg for the plain leaf grades and Rs 63-70 for the brighter liquoring sorts.
