Bangalore Feb. 5 The Defence Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, today invited leading international players to partner with India to leverage its highly skilled engineering professionals and the low cost advantage to help the country strengthen its aerospace sector.

He said the recent Indo-US nuclear deal and the agreement with the Russian navigation signals of the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System for peaceful purposes have signalled the Government's steadfast commitment to actively engage world leaders in the field of aerospace power and space.

Inaugurating the three-day international seminar on `Aerospace - Challenges and Opportunities', organised by the DRDO and the Aeronautical Society of India, Mr Antony said: "India is willing to collaborate with international players to operationalise aerospace weapons and platforms, ranging from combat aircraft to early warning systems and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle tactical missiles and militarily propulsion systems. However, any such partnership should share the gains, risks as well as the work structure".

The seminar would be a platform for the aerospace industry to explore the opportunities for collaboration in various sectors.

Mr Antony also exhorted the private sector to increase total research and development spend to reduce the burden on the Government, which accounts for more than 50 per cent on all sectors.

Earlier, Mr M. Natarajan, Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Defence R& D, while pleading for higher allocation for Defence R&D said: "We need to shift the focus on strategic areas for R&D with an emphasis on basic research".

In this light, aerospace sector assumed significance because of the exponential growth witnessed by India.
