Kolkata Feb. 5 The West Bengal Government on Monday re-imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Singur a few hours before the scheduled visit of the Trinamool Congress Chief, Ms Mamata Banerjee.

The area witnessed a tussle on Sunday between the administration and villagers protesting against the alleged forcible acquisition of farmland for the Tata small car project.

Section 144 was first imposed in the area on November 30 last year.

It was last withdrawn on January 28. Its re-imposition was felt necessary in view of the sporadic incidents of violence.

To remain till Feb 14

Prohibitory orders in Singur will now remain in force till February 14.

Following the re-imposition of Section 144, Ms Banerjee called off her proposed visit to the area planned for Monday.

Instead, she held a meeting in the city with the constituents of the `Krishi Jamin Raksha Committee' and announced that she would stick to her earlier plan of holding a meeting in Singur on February 10.

Statewide blockade

Ms Banerjee has called for a statewide blockade between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday to protest against the re-imposition of Section 144 and Monday's police action in Kamarkundu, the entry point to Singur from Kolkata.

She will also hold a protest meet at Esplanade, in the heart of the city, on February 7.

At Kamarkundu, police clashed with people opposed to the Tata project. A part of the railway track at Kamarkundu station was damaged which led to disruption of train traffic. Several of those injured in the action were admitted to hospital.

In the evening, Ms Banerjee was headed for Chinsura, the headquarters of Hooghly district, to meet some of the injured.
