Information Technology `Fleet tracking tech adoption catching up' T.E. Raja Simhan
This concept is also slowly catching up in India, especially with large fleet operators. Operators are using fleet tracking to enhance vehicle turnaround time and as two-way communication to drivers for enroute pick-up, according to Mr N. Mohanakrishnan, Event Chairman of Leveraging Peripheral Technology to Improve Competitiveness in Manufacturing and Logistics, a two-day seminar to be organised by the CII Institute of Logistics in the city on February 8 and 9. A number of technology service providers have mushroomed in India to support fleet operators with their centralised infrastructure. With the expected enhancement in infrastructure for technologies, the use of mobile technologies on a large scale in India is only a question of time, he told Business Line. Technologies like GPS and GSM would be increasingly used for communication with customers, field staff and effective project management in remote locations. Mr Mohanakrishnan said Indian companies in various sectors, including retail, pharmaceutical and automotive, are yet to realise the full use of technologies like GPS, GSM, RFID (radio frequency identification) and barcode in logistics. The seminar would provide inputs on potential usage of various technologies and case studies from reputed organisations on how companies leverage on effective use of technology in logistics, according to Mr Mohanakrishnan, who is also Executive Director, Internal Audit, Ashok Leyland. Some of the speakers at the two-day event include Professor S. Sadagopan, IIIT (Bangalore); Mr Krishnan Gopalan, Microsoft BizTalk RFID Group; Mr V. Sanjeevi, Managing Director, e-Logistics; Mr Ravi Mathur, CEO, GS1 India; Mr Sravan K. Yallapragada, Industry Architect (RFID), IBM; Mr K. Ravindran of Visteon, Mr William J. Sarvar, Industry Manager, Automotive, Rockwell Automation and Mr Venkatesh Natarajan, DGM (IT), Ashok Leyland.
