Water conservation

Wastage of water in the agricultural sector in India today is estimated at about 50 per cent.

Even in thousands of industries, big and small, and in millions of homes across the country, huge quantities of water are being wasted.

It is ironical that many States are today fighting among themselves through courts and tribunals over their right to water without doing something about the colossal waste of this precious resource in their respective States for the last several decades.

It is time `Water Audit' was made mandatory for all the large agricultural and industrial consumers of water and the major wasters penalised.

And, of course, no concessions need to be made for wrong-doers in the government sector.
