Thiruvananthapuram Feb 6 The Kerala Government has initiated steps to control the rise in prices of essential commodities.

At a meeting that the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, had with representatives of the Hotel and Restaurants Association and other traders here on Tuesday, a decision was taken to reduce the prices of essential commodities and food articles by 5 per cent with effect from February 7.

`RESULTS SEEN'

The Chief Minister said government measures to rein in prices had started showing results. The Government would go ahead with these measures, he added.

One of the measures is to bring commodities and vegetables directly from the producing centres, thus eliminating middlemen. The Government will also consider starting weekly marketing fairs in every panchayat.

The Food Minister, Mr C. Divakaran, said price control committees would be constituted at district and State levels. He also made it clear that raids would be conducted to prevent hoarding of goods.
