The track doubling will help in easing the traffic and facilitate more trains to operate, the Chamber has said. In a memorandum to the Ministers on Wednesday, it welcomed the commitment of the Southern Railway Administration for doubling and electrification of the board gauge line between Villupuram and Tuticorin. It also forwarded a proposal to the Railway Board, noting that the Madurai-Dindigul project has been suffering for long due to merger allotment While the current year provision of Rs 30 crore for the project in a revised estimated cost of Rs 112 crore is welcome, the project should be completed as scheduled by March 2008, it said.
More demands in the memorandum were for a new board gauge route between Madurai and Karaikudi via Melur; immediate allotment of additional funds for developing Koodalnagar Railway Station in the northern part of the city; introduction of push and pull service between Virudhunagar-Madurai-Dindigul; conversion of the Chennai-Tenkasi Pothigai Express, which is running thrice a week now, into a daily service and provision of escalators in first and second platforms of Madurai Junction.
