New Delhi Feb. 6 The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, on Tuesday hinted at the possibility of Mumbai soon needing a third airport for non-scheduled operations.

At a meeting with the Secretary-General of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Mr Taieb Cherif, here today, the Minister sought the international agency's assistance to undertake feasibility studies and clearances for the project.

The ICAO Secretary-General also highlighted the issue of machine readable and electronic passports and said that there was an urgent need for India to upgrade its facilities to be at par with world standards.

Offers tech support

The need for increasing co-operation in technical projects between ICAO and India was also stressed by Mr Cherif, who indicated that the international organisation was keen to provide technical assistance in various areas including next generation air transport systems apart from modernisation and upgradation of various facilities at Delhi and Mumbai airports.

During the interaction, the Minister pointed to the high-level of compliance of India in terms of safety oversight that was found to be higher than that of the world average compiled by ICAO.
