Hyderabad Feb. 6 With information technology (IT) Secretaries from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu wooing semiconductor industries at the Vision Summit here today, the audience turned out be a confused lot as States churned out the statistics. .

The Dean of Indian School of Business, Dr M. Rammohan Rao, summed it up: "It is good that the Secretaries from Kerala and Karnataka did not turn up. Otherwise, the audience would have been more confused!"

The Secretary for Information Technology and Communication, Andhra Pradesh Government, Ms Ratna Prabha, said that it was necessary that companies recruiting candidates become a little more flexible in terms of not insisting on 60 per cent score throughout the student's career.

This would help tap into a larger pool. A thought, which was endorsed by Prof Rao, as it was felt that students from rural areas may also be considered. He felt that insisting on 60 per cent was meaningless.

The Tamil Nadu IT Secretary, Dr C. Chandramouli, said that Tamil Nadu wanted to occupy 25 per cent of the country's information technology and communication space by 2011 and was making all efforts to create the necessary support infrastructure.

Mr Siddharth, IT Secretary, West Bengal Government, said that data showed that West Bengal had one of the largest talent pool and the attrition level was the lowest in the country. As a State that contributes about 16 per cent to the GDP, the potential in the IT and semiconductor is huge, he said.

Mr Siddharth said the West Bengal Government had created an Rs 15 crore venture fund and planned to add another Rs 15 crore to this fund shortly. The Government is in the process of setting up an Indian Design Centre in partnership with the IIT, Khargpur. The project to be taken up under the public-private partnership model would help start-ups.

The Chairman of Indian Semiconductor Association, Mr Rajendra Kumar Khare, said that the success of IT and ITES industry could not be compared with the semiconductor industry. This called for a different approach, he added.
