Suzuki Motorcycles to foray into scooter market

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb. 6

Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Ltd today said it would make a foray into the domestic scooter market by the middle of this year. "We have created an additional one-lakh capacity for producing scooters, which we expect to launch in the market by July this year," the Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) Managing Director, Mr Satya Sheel, told reporters here.

Mr Osamu Suzuki, Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corp, today announced that the Japanese giant would be making an investment of ¥ 20 billion (about Rs 730 crore) into its two-wheeler venture in India by 2010. Mr Sheel said with additional capacity coming in, the company's total capacity would go up to 2-lakh units — one lakh each for scooters and motorcycles. He, however, declined to comment on the details of the scooter model but said, "It would definitely not be a 100 cc model."
