Politics States - West Bengal Sub-inspector killed in Bhawanipore violence Our Bureau
The policemen were trying to prevent the villagers from digging up a road in the area. The body of the DIB sub-inspector had not been recovered till late in the evening. The injured policemen have been shifted to a hospital in Haldia. Around 10 people have been arrested in connection with today's incident. Six persons were killed on January 6-7 in Nandigram when clashes broke out over rumours of land acquisition for a special economic zone slated to be set up there by the Salim Group of Indonesia. The West Bengal Home Secretary, Mr Prasad Ranjan Roy, said all necessary steps would be taken to contain the situation. Asked if the imposition of Section 144 CrPC in Nandigram was being considered, he said that given the size of Nandigram, imposition of Section 144 CrPC there would not be possible. Meanwhile, in Singur, members of the Krishi Jami Bachao Committee damaged a portion of the fence that had been set up to demarcate the land earmarked for the Tata small car project.
