Dairy & Dairy Products States - Tamil Nadu Plea to raise milk purchase price Our Bureau
Addressing presspersons, the Union President, Mr S.R. Rajagopal, said the fodder and milch animal maintenance costs have risen substantially over the last two-and-half years but the procurement rate continued to remain at the 2004 levels causing economic hardship to the milk producing community. "We had time and again appealed to the State Government to intervene and resolve this issue, but there is an inordinate delay in their response," he said. Stating that the milk was the only produce that saw no revision in rates in recent years, Mr Rajagopal said: "Producers in the cooperative sector supplying the produce to Aavin were the most affected lot. Their supplies to the society are witnessing a steep decline". There are about 7500 milk producers cooperatives in the district accounting for a daily supply of 2.4 lakh litres of milk to the society. "This has in the last couple of days fallen to 1.96 lakh litres and is continuing to decline steadily. "At the State level, the supplies have taken a beating from a daily supply of 25 lakh litres to 19 lakh litres at present. "The Government can put a halt to any further fall in supplies by enhancing the procurement rates," he said and pointed out that the private dairies had already effected a hike in the procurement and selling rate. The Union has been asking the Government to enhance the procurement rate of the cow's milk by Rs 3 a litre and by Rs 6 a litre for buffalo milk.
