Mumbai Feb. 8 The Solvent Extractors' Association of India has opposed the suggestion to impose excise duty on refined edible oils.

In a representation to the Union Finance Minister, the association has argued that the move would not generate substantial revenue, but foster distortion in the market, because of `exempted units in places such as Kutch'.

It has also stated that edible oil is an essential food ingredient and any such levy would raise the price of oils and hurt oilseed growers.

Reiterating that edible oils and vanaspati should be kept out of the purview of excise duty, the SEA said the suggested fiscal levy would affect a large number of edible oil refineries across the country, without any substantial benefit to the Government.
