Kolkata Feb. 8 The Third India International Tea Convention will be held here from October 31 to November 2, 2007. The first such convention in 2000 was held in New Delhi and the second in 2003 in Kolkata. "Henceforth, it will be held every year, alternatively in north and south India," said Mr M. Dasgupta, Secretary-General of Indian Tea Association.

The convention, to be organised jointly by the Consultative Committee of Plantation Associations and the Tea Board in partnerships with the Indian Merchant Tea Exporters' Forum and the Federation of All India Tea Traders Associations, will have three components — technical sessions, exhibition and tea tasting forum. "The tea tasting forum will not be the usual technical tasting by tea brokers but a forum to showcase a wide variety of Indian tea in a structured way," Mr Dasgupta said.

Emerging retail

The focus on this year's convention, as indicated, would be on marketing with an accent on exports. "The flavour will be the emerging retailing, covering sourcing options, vending options and other such issues to examine how tea fits into the new scenario that is gradually unfolding," he said. Dr Dasgupta said that this had become important because, in addition to brand promotion, the marketing and selling of tea too were taking place through new channels.

Internationally, new markets were emerging, he said. The western countries, he felt, were no longer considered important markets; instead, West and Central Asia countries, particularly UAE, Iran, Kazakhstan and even Pakistan, held out big promises. .
