Accession to Madrid Protocol okayed

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb. 8

The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for India's accession to the Madrid Protocol concerning the International Registration of Marks. It also approved amending the Trademarks Act 1999.

The Cabinet also gave its nod to initiate action for the accession and agreed to introduce a Bill in Parliament. This will provide better and extensive protection abroad for Indian marks owners and the filing of applications by foreign marks owners in India will facilitate transfer of technology through trade marks licensing and franchising. This will facilitate speedy registration of Indian marks in markets worldwide and promote business confidence in Indian IPR system globally.

Any country, which is a member of the Paris Convention of World Intellectual Property Organisation, can accede to either the Madrid Agreement or the Madrid Protocol or both.
