New Delhi Feb. 8 The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday gave its approval for depositing Rs 13.79 crore with the Andhra Pradesh Government for land acquisition for a uranium mining project being set up by Uranium Corporation of India Ltd in the State.

The approval for the Tummalapalle Mining and Milling Project in Cuddapah district is expected to supplement uranium fuel requirements of the country's nuclear power programme. "The approval of the project will meet the uranium fuel requirement of the nuclear power programme," the Finance Minister, Mr P Chidambaram, told reporters.

Besides developing the area, the project will also provide direct employment to about 934 people in various categories.

Nod for Act amendments

The Cabinet also approved amendments to the Damodar Valley Corporation Act 1948, in order to make the organisation more broad-based and professional. Instead of having a Chairman and two other members appointed by the Centre, a new clause is be inserted in the Act to have a Chairman, a member (technical) and a member (finance), one representative from the Central Government and one representative each from the Jharkhand and West Bengal Governments as the revamped DVC top brass.

There will also be three independent experts, one each from the fields of irrigation, water supply and generation or transmission of electricity in the Corporation.

"The Chairman and members (technical and finance) and the two state Government representatives shall be appointed by the Union Government in consultation with the State Governments concerned," Mr Chidambaram said.

The Finance Minister said the Damodar Valley Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2006, would be introduced in the next session of Parliament.
