Chennai, Feb. 9 Low compliance on fire safety norms is a major cause for concern as buildings mushroom, according to Mr Laiqut Ali Khan, Fire & Safety Association of India.

Addressing a press conference on the association's efforts to enhance awareness about fire safety, Mr Khan said that existing regulations focus more on electricity and water connection approvals than on fire safety approval.

Though the National Building Code put together by the Centre provides detailed guidelines, fire safety is a state subject and many states have not made it mandatory. Cities such as Mumbai and Delhi have made fire safety approvals mandatory. Others should emulate them, Mr Ali said.

The association's secretary, Mr Dilip Karnad, pointed out that in Chennai, the busy T'Nagar area, a major commercial centre, has a profusion of commercial establishments but many are such small lanes that fire trucks cannot reach them fast in an emergency. Building regulations and fire safety norms are being flouted. Fire safety is not accorded as much importance as it should be, he said.

Mr S.K. Dheri, Director, DLF Services Ltd, an expert on fire safety who has given inputs to the National Building Code, said that the Centre is urging the State Governments to ensure that its guidelines are made a part of the building regulations. A number of States have taken appropriate action and more need to follow them, he said.

The Fire & Safety Association of India organised a seminar on Thursdayon the emerging trends in security, safety and integrated building management systems.
