Hyderabad Feb. 9 A special orientation programme for in-service IAS officials on the functioning of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) was organised by the National Institute for Small Industries Extension and Training (Nisiet) here.

The 5-day orientation course, which concluded here on Friday, and perhaps the first for IAS officials, assumes significance in the light of the MSME Development Act 2006 that became operational since October 2, 2006.

As Administrative Services personnel are concerned with the implementation of the different schemes and programmes launched by the Union and State Governments in their respective States, it is necessary that they be provided with insights into the functioning of the sector as also the modalities and parameters for promotion of enterprises in the sector, said Dr Chukka Kondaiah, Principle Director of Nisiet.

The participants were acquainted with the status of the MSME sector in the country when compared with WTO and IPR, the role of self-help groups and cluster approach in the development of MSMEs and emerging trends in entrepreneurship development, among other things, he said in a press release.

The MSME sector, with an estimated 123.42 lakh units providing employment to about 3-crore work force, contributes over 40 per cent of the country's total industrial production (manufacturing) and 35 per cent of exports.

About 13 senior Administration Services officers of 1978-1996 batches participated in the programme sponsored by the Department of Personnel and Training. They represented Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal.
