The opening of the new institutes forms part of the National Design Policy approved by the Cabinet.
The action plan under the policy also calls for initiation of process of granting the "deemed University" or "University Status" to the NIDs so that they can award degrees.
The action plan also includes setting up of specialised design centres of "innovation hubs" for sectors such as automobile and transportation, jewellery, leather, soft goods, electronics/IT hardware products and toys.
It also envisages providing enterprise incubation as well as financial support through mechanisms such as venture funding, loans and market development assistance for start-up design-led ventures.
