Rural banking

The seminar on "Banking in the Hinterland'' to be organised by the Indian Banks Association on February 14 is relevant and timely.

This is particularly so given the emphasis on achieving inclusive growth banking in the rural hinterland.

While the stress was on expansion of branch network in the rural and semi-urban areas in the pre-reform period, rationalisation of branch network and re-location of loss-making branches of regional rural banks (RRBs) was given emphasis in the post-reform era.

Strategies for making rural banking profitable should emerge from the deliberations in the seminar.
