Dredging up dissent

DREDGING UNDER WAY near Adam's Bridge in Rameswaram.

Not all port trusts that have been sounded to participate in the dredging joint venture proposed to be floated by Shipping Corporation of India are convinced of the rationale of the move.

Dredging is a highly specialised job better left to the specialists in the field. It is not enough just to buy a dredger and operating it. It is not like running a cargo ship. There are so many critical issues involved. It is not without reason that the dredging expertise in available only among few countries. Instead, it is felt, our own state-owned dredging firm should be strengthened properly to take on the competition from the foreign dredging firms now dominating the country's dredging scene and therefore dictating terms.

The argument put forward in support of the dredging joint venture is this: The dredging requirement in the country is huge and yet there is no dredging firm of the size and capacity of the world dredging majors. The helplessness of those in need of dredging services is palpable. The state-owned dredging company has its own limitations. First, it concentrates on maintenance dredging. Two, the size of its fleet is not too large. An, three, it has been functioning without a full-time CMD for some time.
